Therapeutic Rose Scented Play Dough

I made some Red Rose Scented Playdough as an activity for Red Week, in our Color of the Week Exploration Series. Not only did our rose scented play dough smell very sweet and floral, but the scent of rose has a naturally calming therapeutic effect, and rose essential oil is soothing and healing to the skin. (Discovery Health 2013)

For homemade playdough, I usually use the general recipe as follows:
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon oil
food coloring as desired

In a heavy saucepan, mix together all the ingredients, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and forms a large lump or ball. (approx. 3 min) Remove from heat and let cool for a bit, then knead until smooth.

To make Rose Scented Playdough
You can use
-Rose essential oil  and/or  rose flavored tea
Break open the tea bag and add it to the mixture while "cooking."

Add the essential oil AFTER the play dough has cooled.
This will make the scent stronger and last longer.

I used both the essential oil AND the rose flavored tea because I had the tea on hand and I thought it would add some great texture as well as extra scent to the play dough.

It turned out lovely and both boys enjoyed playing with it throughout the week.
